Outside our first home in Puerto Rico stood a big flamboyán tree.

We would stop and admire it, its spreading branches, its fiery blossoms, the beauty of something growing right outside our door.

To me, its flame-colored flowers echo the burning bush, where Moses encountered God and heard that the ground beneath his feet was holy.

This is the message of “Holy Ground,” the first painting in my Isla Viva series.
